Report: Cisco not cutting jobs

There are no layoffs planned at Cisco at this time, despite the soft economy, Cisco CEO John Chambers is reported as saying at Credit Suisse technology conference. The networking giant Monday is expected to finalize the layoff of 129 workers in Cisco's Richardson, Texas facility. But those cuts are part of a decision to halt operations within its Broadband Telephony Services unit at the facility, and not related to the economy.

  • Cisco engineers publish wireless dictionary Submitted by Cisco Subnet on Wed, 12/03/2008

Cisco wants to write the wireless book. Well, two Cisco employees do anyway. Joel Barrett, a senior-level wireless networking expert; and Vinay Saini, a software/QA engineer within Cisco's Wireless Networking Business Unit have written a dictionary of wireless terms and acronyms for Certified Wireless Network Professional (CWNP), which provides wireless LAN certification. The dictionary covers Wi-Fi and frequently used wireless terms and provides coverage of all CWNP exam terms and acronyms, according to CWNP.

  • Cisco MARS in the doghouse? Submitted by Cisco Subnet on Wed, 12/03/2008

In August last year, Jon Oltsik, senior analyst at Enterprise Strategy Group praised the success of Cisco MARS (Monitoring Analysis and Response System), noting that Cisco is giving away "the razors [MARS] to sell the blades [Cisco's core networking gear]," and that "No one can schmooze the enterprise networking crowd like Cisco." Now Oltsik has changed his opinion, referring to poor MARS a product in Cisco's "doghouse".

In his blog on cnet, Oltsik explains that Cisco in 2005 and 2006 aggressively pushed the security product into end-user accounts but the product "languished behind competitive offerings, causing problems with the installed base." He cites competition from Enterasys, Juniper, and Nortel, which established partnerships with Q1 Labs. Also, "some Cisco sales executives and channel partners eschewed MARS in favor of more popular Cisco products. When you have a portfolio of hundreds of products, it is easy to lead with your best stuff and never mention those in the doghouse," Oltsik writes.

  • Cisco workers sing for their ethics training Submitted by Cisco Subnet on Wed, 12/03/2008

Cisco workers are singing the praises of their ethics training courses. Instead of using a stuffy and dry training course to teach workers ethics, Cisco is using an interactive training program that mimics the TV show American Idol, according to a story in Ragan.com. Cisco's "Ethics Idol" is a series of four interactive flash modules that employees can access from their desktops. In each episode, an animated contestant describes an ethical dilemma in a witty song parody, according to Ragan.com.

  • Video: A peek inside Cisco's DNA data center lab Submitted by Cisco Subnet on Tue, 12/02/2008

If you wanted to peek inside Cisco's data center, here's your chance. Tech geek blogger Robert Scoble took his camera with him on his recent tour of Cisco's Data center and Network Applications (DNA) Lab in San Jose, Calif. The lab, although is a test data center for customers, is close in design to Cisco's production data center, according to one of the Cisco executives who hosted the Scoble tour. In the video, you'll see many Cisco technologies in action, including the Nexus family, Catalyst switches, and VFrame.

Cisco Russia financed more than $700 million in sales by Brad Reese

In a six-page Fast Company article about Cisco this week, Cisco CEO John Chambers is quoted as stating: "In Russia, our leasing portfolio is more than $700 million, with one small write-down for only $200,000."Chambers' quote above really caught my attention because according to its Form 10-K filed with the SEC on Sep. 15, 2008, Cisco's $700 million leasing portfolio in Russia would represent more than 49% of Cisco lease receivables, net. Note: Verified with Cisco the accuracy of... 2

Taking the Gray out of Green by Jimmy Ray Purser

I am out in San Jose this week taping the next TechWiseTV show. We were requested to do a show on Green. That sounded about as appealing as going to my mother in laws for a week without beer. I fought this idea hard because we already did a show on this AND I just do not see a technical angle as much as I see a political one. Then I met Rob Aldrich. You see I think that designing a network for maximum power efficiency is just a part of good engineering. Reducing heat in the DC is always...

Using a Packet Trace to Show TCP Throughput by Michael Morris

Most network people understand the terrible affect delay can have on TCP sessions. TCP must pause data transfers while waiting for ACKs. The more network delay there is, the longer this pause will be. However, many people, including most other IT professionals, do not understand this problem. They assume everything is connected at 1Gbps. Plus, TCP window sizes - how much data a host will send/receive before waiting/sending an ACK - can also significantly affect the transfer rate. Sadly,... 1
