TODAY'S TOP PICKS

Pimp my crib, Cisco

Proving that Cisco has a sense of humor it has posted up a really funny video that takes viewers on a trip down a tech memory lane. A bunch of actors in some ill-fitting wigs depict scenes of friends showing  off their latest cool gadgets, such as the Atari 800 and the Apple Newton ("Wouldn't this be a bomb if you could make phone calls out of this thing?"). The video is the first in a series of Digital Cribs, billed by Cisco as an up-close look at celebrity homes and their favorite gadgets. The series includes a look the technologies used by celebs including Meghan Asha (pictured), a roving tech correspondent, girl-about-town and soon-to-be star of her own reality TV show, Shane Battier, NBA basketball player, and Lincoln Shatz, a video artist. Cisco: Networks will consolidate and servers disaggregate09/04/08

There are some interesting crumbs dropped by Cisco execs in the company's data center blog that describes where Cisco believes the data center is headed. To support new applications such as those presented by Google's Chrome browser and Google Gears, along with the movement of applications away from traditional PCs to mobile devices, Omar Sultan writes that the back end infrastructure will be virtualized and processes would be automated. Meanwhile, Doug Gourlay believes that "networks will consolidate and servers disaggregate."

Microsoft, Cisco collaboration tie-up 12 months on: Still just PR fluff?09/04/08

It's been a year since Cisco and Microsoft CEOs Steve Ballmer and John Chambers took to the stage to indulge in some collaborative lovefest, which some observers dismissed as just PR fluff. Just a day later, the event was overshadowed by Microsoft publishing a white paper detailing how its product is more superior to Cisco's equivalent. Fast foward 12 months and Cisco and Microsoft are set to do battle in the e-mail space through Cisco's recent acquisition of Exchange rival PostPath. Despite the rocky start to the relationship, both companies say the interoperability effort is still full-on, according to an interview with Cisco and Microsoft execs that's posted on Microsoft's Press Pass Web site,

Cisco's network management challenges09/03/08

Cisco recognizes that network management is one of its biggest challenges - one that is getting bigger as it continues to add acquisitions to its portfolio. According to this story by Network World's Jim Duffy, Cisco doesn't have ambitions to create an all-encompassing network management framework, similar to HP's OpenView, rather its tools are an "enabler" of those systems to share events, alarms and diagnostic data. Cisco Subnet bloggers share their wish list for Cisco in network management: Michael Morris suggests that Cisco hire someone from Apple to improve its IOS user interface, while Larry Chaffin singles out CiscoWorks as in need of a user interface face-lift.
